With each new project, every organization has the potential to improve itself, to make itself better.  An organization does not invest hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars every year to be the same or be worse.  At the beginning of each project, a cost/benefit analysis is always done, but how many organizations go back and prove that those benefits were actualized?

5 Common mistakes when converting integration engine

I can relate to the insurance commercial on TV - "We know a thing or two because we have seen a thing or two." In my experience, I have seen a thing or two when organizations migrate systems, and while most of these apply to any system conversion, I want to apply them to migrating from one integration engine to another.

Not your typical consultant

"It's a compliment, I think?" I remember telling myself the first time I ever heard it. I was sitting across the desk from my first consulting client when I heard, "You know, you are not the typical consultant!". At the time, I passed over the statement because I didn't understand it. I was just being me, so why isn't that the typical consultant.

I have been working with integration for almost 25 years and I have always tried to maintain vendor neutrality with EMRs and integration engines.  However, I often get asked my opinion on what’s my favorite.  Each EMR and integration engine has their strong points and weaknesses.

I admit, I have been doing this for a long time.  I have enjoyed my career and I have encountered so many talented and incredible people along the way.  However, can I say that I have found that there is some misconception about integration.  This article is not meant to be divisive or “point the finger” at anyone, but to help bring about understanding about some of the misconceptions of integration.
  • Integration is not just the responsibility of the Interface Analyst.  Each sending and receiving application is responsible for the entire stream of data.

I recently finished two very large Epic implementations.  Both implementations were very much alike – large multiple hospital networks.  Both in the Northeast.   Both implementing the same technology.  However, I finished both projects with very different emotions.  One I absolutely love doing and the other I couldn’t wait for it to be done.   So what was the primary difference that would cause me to have such an extreme emotional difference?  Click below to download the rest of the article.

7 Centers of Excellence of Maintaining Your Interface Engine
When it comes to interface engines there are 7 Centers of Excellence that will tell you quickly if you have a nightmare on your hands. These 7 items can make a world of difference and yet, they are so simple that they are easily missed.
  1. Naming conventions of interfaces
  2. Standardize programming structure of your engine
  3. Required documentation of programming and modifications
  4. Testing environments including the interface engine and applications
  5. Testing requirements including documentation and sign offs
  6. Synchronization between the test engines and productions
    • This can go either way. Most likely you have test to production covered. However, admit it, you made a change quickly in production. Did it get put back into the test environment?
  7. Change control

Meditech 6.X: Capturing Temperature Source in a Single Query Field

Picture
It was my first experience working with Meditech that made me really think outside of the box to see if we could get temperature source in its own query field.  There was no way the clinical staff would accept Meditech’s recommendation.  The following steps are one solution that I have deployed at several hospitals.

Putting together a Go Live Plan can be a daunting task especially if you have never done it before.  A Go Live Plan should provide structure not micro manage the individuals.  Striking this balance can be more of an art form than a science!
