I have been working with integration for almost 25 years and I have always tried to maintain vendor neutrality with EMRs and integration engines. However, I often get asked my opinion on what’s my favorite. Each EMR and integration engine has their strong points and weaknesses. If I were to pick a favorite, I would have to say that Epic and Ensemble are a powerhouse couple. Epic Bridges offers a customization of integration that is hands down the best out of the EMRs, and the shocking surprise is that it is standard customization. What you can do with Bridges that is unique to your organization and interoperability is remarkable. I haven’t seen the other major EMR vendors provide this. In regard to Intersystem’s Ensemble, if I were to create an integration engine, it would be pretty close to Ensemble. Their architecture and user interface is smartly designed. I would swear that it was created by interface analyst. It is a very mature product that meets today integration challenges and with tools that help the day-to-day operation run smoothly. Combined this two together, and I understand why so many organization use this two together!
